Design research is foundational to creating products, services, and systems that respond to human needs. In the public and international development sectors, understanding and meeting human needs are critical for improved livelihoods and better governance.

Creation and development of concepts and specifications aimed at optimizing the functions, value, and appearance of products, structures, and systems.Industrial design is a process of design applied to products that are to be manufactured through techniques of mass production. Its key characteristic is that design is separated from manufacture: the creative act of determining and defining a product's form and features takes place in advance of the physical act of making a product, which consists purely of repeated, often automated, replication.

Product development is the process of creating a new product to be sold by a business or enterprise to its customers. Design refers to those activities involved in creating the styling, look and feel of the product, deciding on the product's mechanical architecture, selecting materials and processes, and engineering the various components necessary to make the product work. Development refers collectively to the entire process of identifying a market opportunity, creating a product to appeal to the identified market, and finally, testing, modifying and refining the product until it is ready for production. A product can be any item from a book, musical composition, or information service, to an engineered product such as a computer, hair dryer, or washing machine.

It is a decision making process in which the basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective. Among the fundamental elements of the design process are the establishment of objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing and evaluation.

Nothing brings you closer to the functionality of the final product than prototyping. While wireframes sketch out the blueprint and mock-ups show the feel and texture of the design, it is the prototype that brings to life the "experience" behind "user experience."

Jigs and fixtures are special purpose tool which are used to facilitate production when work piece is based on the concept of interchangeability according to which every part will be produced within an established tolerance. Jigs and fixtures provide on means of manufacturing interchangeable parts since they establish a relation with predetermined to tolerance between the work and cutting tool. The use of jig and fixture makes possible more rapid and more accurate manufacturing at a reduction of cost

Reverse engineering is taking apart an object to see how it works in order to duplicate or enhance the object. It involves producing 3-D images of manufactured parts when a blueprint is not available in order to remanufacture the part. To reverse engineer a part, the part is measured by a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). As it is measured, a 3-D wire frame image is generated and displayed on a monitor. After the measuring is complete, the wire frame image is dimensioned. Any part can be reverse engineered using these methods.
